Skene Business Centres - Rebecca Anton

"I like working for a family business. It’s easier to communicate, you can talk directly to everyone and get to know each staff member on a personal level."

Reception:   Queen's Gardens, Aberdeen

Rebecca joined the Skene Business Centres team as a Front of House receptionist a year ago in December 2023. With a background as a viewing agent and a brief venture into oil and gas, working at Skene Business Centres appealed as it’s so client orientated.

“The job advertisement jumped out at me as I’m a people person’, says Rebecca. ‘I’m working as part of a small team, which I enjoy. And, on a practical level, the post was office based with a focus on admin and attention to detail.’

‘In reality I’ve found the role fast-paced. The days go by quickly, I’m never sat wondering what to do next. It’s a 9-5 job, which I appreciate as I don’t face long hours or taking work home with me. My tasks include greeting all those who arrive at 7 Queen’s Gardens, clients and visitors alike. I man the remote reception for our properties at Rubislaw Den North and Gilcomston Park, which is always busy. I receive and field phonecalls at reception, add new staff to the system and complete their paperwork and passes. I speak to clients every single day, and if I can help them, let’s say some simple photocopying, then I will. I try to accommodate people and if I don’t know the answer to something then I find a person who does.”

Rebecca works in a team of five. Ashleigh (Head of Admin), Tracy (Manager), Maeghan (Director of SBC) and Max (the concierge).

“It’s a solid team,’ says Rebecca. ‘I like working for a family business. It’s easier to communicate, you can talk directly to everyone and get to know each staff member on a personal level. For example, if maintenance needs done, such as a small leak, I can refer a request upwards and get a quick answer from Tracy on a decision to move forward. Smaller jobs, such as collecting a set of keys, I can simply add to the concierge’s job list myself. When it comes to office events, it’s a team effort, from Christmas parties for clients, to running the charity Christmas quiz, which I’m doing this year. We also know the Skene family, Jennifer the Managing Director visits weekly and the founder, Mr Skene, visits roughly once a month so I see them quite regularly.’

‘I’ve received training here too, including first aid, fire safety, anti-money laundering and bribery. It would ultimately be lovely to progress within the company, and I’m also happy learning day by day, and I enjoy coming to work. Small things are a bonus — a long term client recently moved on when they purchased a property and we received a lovely fruit basket from her. It was very thoughtful to give us something. I also buy my hair products from a hair dresser tenant, so these small details are the cherry on the cake!”
